History: Now and Then

Comparisons

While you can teach Early Years children facts about history which they can recall, I believe the best way to help children understand the past is to compare the past with now.

For three years in a row now, I have taught my class the Monarchs Song from Horrible Histories. I usually only teach the chorus but this year the children asked for the ‘William the conker’ song so I’ve tried to teach them the entire song.

You can find the lyrics for the songs here. There are lots of fun songs teaching the children about history, however I would listen to the songs first as they can sometimes be inappropriate for the very little ones. I’d particularly avoid Pachacuti and Evil Emperors. (Although, my 6 year old nephew in year two absolutely loves those particular horrible histories!)

Compare Now and Then

I personally believe the easiest way for little children to understand the past is to compare now and then.

For example,

granddad and his mum scan0016
This is my granddad as a child in the late 1920’s. This is me as a child in the late 1980’s (although you could use a photo from a child in your class, or in a different class)

The first thing children may say is that one picture is in colour and one picture is in black and white. This is where you can ask the children which is the oldest picture?

Phase 3 Resources

Letters and Sounds

I have made some fill the gap and match the pairs resources to help children with reading the digraphs and trigraphs from the Letters and Sounds Phase 3.

matching pairs Matching Pairs

This is a simple game, basically the children read the word and then match up to the correct picture. I tend to ask the children to be competitive and see who can collect the most pairs.

I’m going to laminate these cards and put Velcro in the space so that when the child puts the sound in the box it will stick in. It’s all about choosing the correct sound for the word.

These resources are designed to try to encourage the children to read the trigraphs and digraphs as a single sound and not sound out each individual letter. I’m not sure if it’ll work but I am hoping to try it.

New Role Play Area

The Space Station

I think role play areas are my favourite! I do like creating these lovely spaces for the children to work in.

This term, it’s a space station!

It’s not quite finished yet,  but I think my TA has done such a fantastic job building it that I wanted to show you what it looks like already!

I have more photos of the details!

High Frequency and Tricky Words

Bingo Bongo

The best way to teach reading, in my opinion, is repetition. I’m trying to learn to read Chinese and the only way I’m remembering the words is by seeing them over and over again.

For little ones, learning to read is similar. They have the sounds but to translate them into written form is difficult.

Bingo is a fun way to be repetitive. The children see it as a game and don’t realise they’re learning! When I’ve left the bingo out in the classroom, the children have even chosen to play this activity by themselves!

All my resources are available online to download.
